began 51 years ago, when a father in desperate need ran
to IAFF member George Graney's Fire Engine Company 1 in
South Boston. The man's name was Charlie Crowley, father
of two crippled sons and a high school friend of George

MDA research
has led the field of neuromuscular diseases since the 1950s,
but the speed of research increased enormously in 1986,
with the identification of the gene for Duchenne muscular
dystrophy. Since then, MDA researchers have identified genes
for nearly all genetic diseases in MDA's program. Many of
the nongenetic diseases in MDA's program result from misdirected
activity of the body's immune system.
